Tips for Using & Hiding Hair Extensions with Thin Hair
Last updated on
If you have thin hair, extensions can be a saviour – helping you achieve voluminous, thick locks.
But it can also be tricky to blend your hair extensions in naturally with thin hair – especially hiding the clips and wefts. Try out our top tips below and follow along with our tutorial video to see how to achieve each style.
Tip #1 – Disguise Shorter Hair with ‘The Twist’
First up, we have a little trick that we like to call ‘the twist’.
This helps disguise the shorter ends of your hair from appearing at the nape of the neck and giving away your natural hair.
All you need to do is section off your hair at the nape of your neck, from one side to the other. Then simply twist your hair, and secure this in place against your head using a bobby pin.
You can then simply clip the wefts on to ‘the twist’ – hiding your shorter, thin hair and leaving your long, voluminous hair on show for all to see.
Tip #2 – Only Use the Wefts You Need
Another tip for using hair extensions with thin hair is pretty simple – don’t use all of the wefts from the Full Head Set.
You’re probably thinking “what? I thought I needed all of the hair for it to look natural?”.
Well, thin haired ladies can get away with wearing fewer wefts – as there isn’t as much natural hair to conceal or blend with your extensions.
So, figure out which hairstyle you're going to be wearing, then decide how many wefts you need for the hairstyle to appear natural.
Tip #3 – Apply Volumising Dry Shampoo to the Roots
Next up, we have a tip that’s amazing for adding some much-needed volume and texture to thin hair – as well as some grip for your hair extensions to hang on to.
And this can all be achieved with one product – volumising dry shampoo.
Volumising dry shampoo gives thin hair a much needed boost. And what’s better? It’s so quick and easy to use.
So, if you find your thin hair is a little limp and your hair extension clips have nothing to grip on to, simply spritz some volumising dry shampoo into your locks and massage – then get styling.
Tip #4 – Backcomb the Roots
Next up, the back-combing tip. You might already be familiar with this one, but are you doing it the right way?
To help disguise your wefts and clips, those of us with thin hair simply need to backcomb. It also gives you an extra security blanket when wearing hair extensions, to stop them dropping or falling out.
Be sure to focus on the root section of your hair to begin with and work downwards until you reach the wefts.
Tip #5 – Crimp the Roots
If you don’t like backcombing – but still need something for your hair to grip to – don’t worry. There is a super easy alternative that you can try. Crimping!
Using a mini crimper will add instant lift and texture to your roots, so your hair has a little extra grip for your hair extensions to grip onto.
This is also the perfect tool for helping you achieve a range of voluminous styles, too!
Tip #6 – Curl Your Extensions
Our final tip to blend hair extensions with thin hair is to curl them.
Using a large barrelled curling tong, curl away from your face for an effortless, natural finish.
Remember, the bigger section you take, the bigger the curl. Our go-to styling tool to achieve this look is the Session Instant Heat Tong 32mm – which is our absolute favourite for voluminous, bouncy curls.
